CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition of prolonged and severe tiredness or weariness (fatigue) that is not relieved by rest and is not directly caused by other conditions. CFS may be worsened by physical or mental activity. Patients who suffer with CFS function at a significantly lower level of activity than before the onset of the illness.

Based on a 1999 study CFS is thought to affect approximately 4 out of 1,000 adults in the United States. CFS occurs more often in women than men, and in people in their 40s and 50s although the reasons for this are still unknown

The key defining characteristics reported by patients includes: weakness, muscle pain, impaired memory and/or mental concentration, insomnia, and post-exertional fatigue lasting more than 24 hours.

In some cases, CFS can persist for years.

Unfortunately the cause or causes of CFS have yet to be identified and there are no specific diagnostic tests are available.

The Center of Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) states that in order to be diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome  a patient must satisfy two criteria:

1. Have severe chronic fatigue for at least 6 months or longer that is not relieved by rest and not due to medical or psychiatric conditions associated with fatigue as excluded by clinical diagnosis.

2. Concurrently have four or more of the following symptoms:

  • Self-reported impairment in short-term memory or concentration severe enough to cause substantial reduction in previous levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities.
  • Sore throat that's frequent or recurring
  • Tender cervical or axillary lymph nodes
  • Muscle pain
  • Multi-joint pain without swelling or redness
  • Headaches of a new type, pattern, or severity
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Post-exertional malaise (extreme, prolonged exhaustion and sickness following physical or mental activity) lasting more than 24 hours
Living with chronic fatigue syndrome can be difficult. As with any debilitating chronic illnesses, CFS can have a devastating impact on daily life, requiring patients to make significant lifestyle changes and adapt to a series of new limitations.

One key to managing CFS is working with health care professionals to create an individualized treatment program. This program should be based on a combination of therapies, for example traditional and alternative, which address symptoms, activity management and coping techniques.

Here is an example of some products Dr. Slagle recommends to her patients suffering from CFS:

Rule out food sensitivities, blood sugar instabilities, anemia, low thyroid & adrenal function, chronic candida, depression, & other causes when possible. See relevant books in book store. Chronic fatigue can often be related to various nutritional deficiencies as well. Avoid sugar, alcohol, caffeine. Limit carbohydrates & emphasize protein. Be aware that white pastas metabolize like sugar in your body. Rule out medication side effects.

VIRGIN COCONUT OIL, A Healthier Way to Cook

Not only is Virgin coconut oil is one of the healthiest oils to cook with, it is also one of the safest. This is due to the fact that it contains no trans fatty acids and does not break down at high temperatures, unlike many other oils.

contains no trans fatty acids and does not break down at high temperatures, unlike many other oils.

Coconut Oil has been the main source of fat in many tropical areas around the globe.

Many researchers regard is as one of the healthiest cooking oils because it is very low in fat & cholesterol.

Because virgin coconut oil is a medium chain triglyceride, it does not require extra enzymes for proper digestion and absorption, it can be converted into energy almost instantly.

Even people who have trouble digesting fats can benefit from using coconut oil.

Did you know that meals cooked for hospital patients are often made with coconut oil?

The high lauric acid content found in extra virgin coconut oil makes antiviral, antimicrobial, and antifungal.

DEPRESSION HELP WITHOUT ANTIDEPRESSANTS

Did you know that many doctors are now medicating unhappiness with antidepressants?

According to a government study, antidepressants have become the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States. They're prescribed more than drugs to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, or headaches..

In a study conducted at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they looked at 2.4 billion drugs prescribed in visits to doctors and hospitals in 2005. Of those, 118 million were for antidepressants.

Reuters Health reports more than a quarter of Americans taking antidepressants have never been diagnosed with any of the conditions the drugs are typically used to treat, according to new research.

According to a report in Archives of general Psychiatry, Antidepressant use in the U.S. surged from less than 6% to more than 10%, or more than 27 million people in 1996 to 2005. This was the last period in which data were available. The study, which surveyed nearly 50,000 people above the age of six, reveals that antidepressants are being used to treat not just depression and anxiety but disorders ranging from back pain to sleeplessness.

The good news is Dr. Priscilla Slagle’s book “ The Way Up From Down” is a better way to deal with depression. The book is an easy to follow drug-free program that combines B vitamins & amino acids. This program has been used successfully in her practice for many years and is still helping people today.

Earthquake Survival

Yesterday I received an email which I found to be so useful want to share it with you as a blog. It clarifies the best ways to survive an earthquake. Though I have lived most of my life near San Andreas fault and been through many earthquakes, no one has ever satisfactorily specified what to do when it strikes. This email does that.

Forget hiding under a table or standing in a doorway. This can save lives.

Please share this with all your loved ones and other contacts.

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON 'THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE'

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI ), the world's most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years, and have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene -- unnecessary

Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them - NOT under them. This space is what I call the 'triangle of life'. The larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the 'triangles' you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed building.

TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

1) Most everyone who simply 'ducks and covers' when building collapse are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed.

2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a bed, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair.

6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!

7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different 'moment of frequency' (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

8) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible - It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.

9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.

Spread the word and save someone's life...

The entire world is experiencing natural calamities so be prepared!

'We are but angels with one wing, it takes two to fly'

In 1996 we made a film, which proved my survival methodology to be correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul, University of Istanbul Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific test. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten mannequins did 'duck and cover,' and ten mannequins I used in my 'triangle of life' survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse we crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results. The film, in which I practiced my survival techniques under directly observable, scientific conditions , relevant to building collapse, showed there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover.

There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using my method of the 'triangle of life.' This film has been seen by millions of viewers on television in Turkey and the rest of Europe, and it was seen in the USA , Canada and Latin America on the TV program Real TV.

6 POWERFUL MUSHROOMS COMBINE TO HELP CANCER PATIENTS

Myco-phyto Complex is a combination of Six powerful mushrooms working together to help cancer patients and others regain healthy immune systems.

This formula has the potential to:

  • Support the immune system
  • Help to prevent cancer
  • Counteract the toxicity of chemotherapy and radiation treatment
  • Sustain remission
  • Prolong the lifespan of cancer patients
  • Kill cancer cells
  • Shrink tumors
  • Help to keep breast cancer cells from invading and growing.
In an in vitro study, researchers found that MycoPhyto Complex thwarted highly invasive human breast cancer cells (specifically, MDA-MB 231 breast cancer cells) in several distinct ways.

It:
  • Interrupted the normal cell cycle, to stop the cancer cells from proliferating.
  •  Inhibited cell adhesion, so cancer cells couldn’t group together to form bigger tumors.
  • Put a stop to the cancer cells invading the healthy cells.
  •  Hampered cancer cell migration
When cancer cells can’t band together to form tumors, invade other cells, or migrate throughout the body, it decreases the risk the cancer will metastasize—and increases the chances that the cancer can be eradicated.

In vitro studies are test tube or research studies, but not studies in a living being, which is called in vivo. Though all the in vitro studies here look promising, we still need placebo controlled double blind in vivo
studies to be performed. Those are expensive and complicated when there is no drug patent and no money to be recouped with patent approval.

Nevertheless the studies which are available are quite promising enough so to consider this product a good adjunct treatment for cancer or other immune system challenges.

Following is a discussion of the properties of the various mushroom extracts in this formula.

Mushroom extract #1 – CORIOLUS VERSICOLOR
This is known as Karawatake in Japan. One of the compounds in this mushroom has been patented as a pharmaceutical anti-cancer drug in Japan.

Two key components of this mushroom have been studied vigorously against cancer: kureha (also known as PSK, for polysaccharide kureha) and PSP (polysaccharide peptide), which has been the subject of Phase II and Phase III clinical trials in China. Those two compounds are believed to be the power behind Coriolus versicolor’s effectiveness.

Let’s take a look at just a few of the studies.

One study found that adding PSK to chemotherapy consistently doubled the five-year survival rate for patients with advanced stomach cancer.  An eight-year placebo-controlled trial of 111 patients who’d undergone curative surgery for colon cancer found that those in the PSK group had “a significantly higher survival rate” than the patients in the placebo group.

Japanese researchers studied PSK (a product called Krestin) in patients who’d undergone conventional treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and at the five-year mark, nearly four times as many people in the PSK group were still alive compared to the placebo group.

In another study on NSCLC, researchers found that 28 days of treatment with PSP slowed disease progression, and substantially improved the white blood cell counts and body fat percentages of the patients in the PSP group, verses the placebo group.

Coriolus versicolor studies have shown that this mushroom—thanks in part to its key compounds—helps activate the natural killer (NK) cells that can help protect your body from foreign invaders, including cancer cells.  And PSK seems to help increase the number of T-lymphocytes (T-cells), powerful members of your body’s disease-fighting team. The PSK compound also appears to increase production of special tumor-infiltrating cells known as B-lymphocytes.

Chemotherapy and radiation may kill off cancer cells, but they can also do damage to some healthy cells. Adding medicinal mushrooms to the treatment regimen may add a layer of protection allowing patients to get
through these trying treatments more easily. One animal study found that PSK seemed to prevent damage to healthy cells during specific chemotherapy treatment.

Mushroom Extract #2-REISHI

Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has been used for more than 2000 years in traditional Chinese medicine for respiratory, cardiovascular, and liver support. The reishi mushroom also brings specific cancer-fighting powers to the formula, especially fighting leukemia and lymphoma, breast, prostate, and colon cancers. It is generally known for its adaptogenic properties, which means it brings balance to your immune system.

The Japanese government has officially listed Reishi as a cancer-fighting substance. In vitro studies have shown this mushroom to have anti-tumor properties. It seems to be especially effective in battling breast cancer cells.

One in vitro study found that reishi could stop the MCF-7 cell cycle, and bring on apoptosis (cell death).

Another in vitro study showed that reishi suppressed the growth of highly invasive MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells.

An in vitro study found Reishi could keep highly invasive PC-3 prostate cancer cells (and breast cancer cells) from migrating. Another in vitro study showed reishi could kill off colon cancer cells. Another in vitro study found that reishi could also induce apoptosis (cell death) in leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma cells.

Reishi also seems to protect cancer patients from the harmful side of cancer treatment, specifically against radiation therapy.

Mushroom #3- AGARICUS BLAZE ( Mushroom of the Sun)

This mushroom has both immune-building and cancer-destroying properties.  Among these mushrooms, it contains the most beta-1,3-glucan—a phytochemical known for supporting the immune system.

It helps destroy tumors by blocking their supply lines—it keeps them from forming new blood vessels, so they can’t get the nutrients they need to thrive.

An animal study found that active compounds in Agaricus blazei helped prevent mice from getting cancer by stimulating cancer-killing T-cells.

A human trial showed that an Agaricus blazei extract improved the quality of life and boosted natural killer cell action in women undergoing chemotherapy for cervical, ovarian, or endometrial cancer.

Mushroom #4-CORDYCEPS SINESIS

This mushroom offers liver support and is believed to improve vital energy. Cordyceps sinesis contains powerful compounds that inhibit tumor growth and also increase the immune system’s ability to fight tumors.

Mushroom #5- POLYPORUS UMBELLATUS

This mushroom supports the liver, is often used to improve circulation and immune support in the pelvic area. Polyporus umbellatus contains cytotoxic compounds (meaning they kill cancer cells), and has been shown (in animal studies) to be effective against bladder and liver cancers.

Mushroom #5-MAITAKE (GRIFOLA FRONDOSA)

This mushroom is best known for its ultra-powerful Maitake D-Fraction,

In addition to its anti-cancer effects, maitake boosts your immune system in several ways:
  • Activates NK-Cells so they can attack with full force.
  • Stimulates TNF-Alpha (tumor necrosis factor, which damages blood vessels created by tumors)
  • Increases the number of helper T-Cells
MycoPhyto Complex comes in two forms, capsules and powder, so you can choose
whichever is easier for you to use.

The powder is made to be used as a tea, and can be mixed into boiling water, and left to steep for a few minutes before drinking (for full benefit, make sure you consume even the particles that haven’t dissolved).

For the best results, take MycoPhyto Complex on an empty stomach, at least thirty minutes before
eating and two hours after eating.

For immune support using the capsules, the suggested loading dose is three capsules, two times a day for two weeks. After that, the dose decreases to 1-2 capsules daily.

For immune support using the powder, the recommendation is one-half scoop, twice a day for two weeks, then switch to one-half scoop once or twice each day.

For active disease-fighting support:
Using capsules- suggested loading dose is 6 capsules, 2-3 times each day for 1-2 months.
After that, the standard dose is 3-6 capsules, twice a day.

Using the powder, the loading dose is one full scoop, taken 2-3 times daily for 1-2 months. Following that, the standard dose is 1-2 scoops taken once or twice each day.

Vilazodone A New Antidepressant Drug Approved By The FDA in Just 8 Weeks of Testing

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved vilazodone tablets (Viibryd, Clinical Data, Inc) for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults.

For the 18 million Americans dealing with daily depression, this is great news!

Vilazodone is the first approved drug that is both a combination selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and a partial agonist of serotonergic (5HT1A) receptors.

In 2 randomized, double-blind trials in adults with MDD, vilazodone 40 mg once daily was shown to be significantly superior to placebo at improving depressive symptoms, as measured by a mean change in the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale total score from baseline to week 8. Patients in the study were titrated up to the 40-mg dose during the course of 2 weeks.

VITAMIN D MAY INCREASE TESTOSTERONE LEVELS IN MEN

A study was conducted to evaluate whether vitamin D supplementation influences testosterone levels in men.

The reproductive tract in men has been identified as a target tissue for vitamin D. Recent data suggests that there is an association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and testosterone levels in men.

A randomized controlled trial of healthy overweight men undergoing a weight reduction program were analyzed for testosterone levels. This study included 200 non-diabetic subjects, of whom 165 participants (54 men) completed the trial. Participants were given either 3332 IU of vitamin D daily for 1 year (n=31) or placebo (n=23).

At the start of the trial, 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations were in the deficiency range (<50nmol/l) and testosterone values were at the lower end of the reference range (9.09-55.28nmol/l for males aged 20-49 years) in both groups. Mean circulating 25(OH)D concentrations increased significantly by 53.5nmol/l in the vitamin D group, but remained almost constant in the placebo group. Compared to baseline values, a significant increase in total testosterone levels (from 10.7±3.9nmol/l to 13.4±4.7nmol/l; p<0.001), bioactive testosterone (from 5.21±1.87nmol/l to 6.25±2.01nmol/l; p=0.001), and free testosterone levels (from 0.222±0.080nmol/l to 0.267±0.087nmol/l; p=0.001) were observed in the vitamin D supplemented group. By contrast, there was no significant change in any testosterone measure in the placebo group.

This study was conducted by Pilz S, Frisch S, Koertke H, Kuhn J, Dreier J, Obermayer-Pietsch B, Wehr E, Zittermann A. at the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Medical University of Graz, Austria.

Their conclusion: suggests that vitamin D supplementation might increase testosterone levels.

Diets High in Trans Fats Can Increase the Risk of Depression, While Diets Rich in Olive Oil Can Decrease the Risk

We have known for years that diets high in trans-fats can increase the risk of heart disease, but a new study shows that trans fat rich diets can also boost the risk of depression.

This study involved 12,000 people and showed that participants with elevated levels of trans-fats had a 48% increased risk for depression than their counterparts who consumed diets low in trans fats.

However this study showed that diets rich in olive oil, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) appear to have a protective effect and lower depression risk.

In fact, participants with an olive oil consumption higher than 20 grams a day (about 0.7 ounces) had a 30% lower risk of depression than those without consumption or with a very low consumption of olive oil,

Study conducted by researcher Almudena Sanchez-Villegas, PhD, associate professor of preventive medicine at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Las Palmas, Spain.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS MAY BE HELPFUL FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS(ASD)

In the study 10 children between the ages of four & seven with ASD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4(th) edition (DSM-IV), were given 1 gram of Omega-3 per day for 12 weeks. Each child received two 500mg capsules that contained 190 mg of EPA & 90 mg of DHA.

The children were evaluated before, during, and after treatment using The Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC), Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), Clinical Global Impression (CGI), and Children’s Psychiatric Rating Scale (CPRS).

Of the 9 subjects who completed the study, 8 showed improvement of about 33% on the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC). None of the children experienced any side effects although 1 child deteriorated when he stopped taking the omega-3 after six weeks but improved when he began again.

The study showed the children showed improvement in core symptoms including sociability and speech.

Women with Higher Magnesium Levels Reduce Their Risk of Sudden or Arrhythmic Cardiac Death

In 1980 a prospective study (a study that starts in the present and continues forward in time) of 88, 375 women who were free of disease was conducted.Over the 26-year follow-up 505 cases of sudden or arrhythmic death were documented. The relative risk of sudden cardiac death was found to be significantly lower in women in the highest quartile (a value which divides the data into four equal parts), as compared to the lowest quartile of dietary magnesium.

Levels of plasma magnesium, assessed in a nested, case-control analysis including 99 sudden cardiac death cases and 291 subjects matched for age, ethnicity, smoking and presence of Cardiovascular Disease, and who were also inversely associated with sudden cardiac death . Each 0.25-mg/dL (1 SD) increment in plasma magnesium was associated with a 41% reduced risk of sudden cardiac death.

This study was conducted by Chiuve SE, Korngold EC, et al, Am J Clin Nutr, at The Center for Arrhythmia Prevention, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA).

Their conclusion "In this prospective cohort of women, higher plasma concentrations and dietary magnesium intakes were associated with lower risks of SCD. If the observed association is causal, interventions directed at increasing dietary or plasma magnesium might lower the risk of SCD."

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) Shown to be Associated With Low Omega-3 Fatty Acid Index and Cardiovascular Risk factors

A case-controlled study of 166 adults, 86 were inpatients with major depressive disorder but without cardiovascular disease and the other 80 were age and sex matched healthy controls with various conventional risk factors of cardiovascular disease. These risks included high triglycerides (152 mg/dL vs 100 mg/dL), fasting glucose (96 mg/dL vs 87 mg/dL) greater waist circumference (97 cm vs 87 cm), and higher BMI (26 vs. 24 kg/m(2))) were found to be more prevalent in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), while the omega-3 index (3.9% vs. 5.1%) and levels of individual omega-3 fatty acids were significantly lower in patients with MDD. Additional information showed that having an omega-3 index less than 4% was found to be associated with higher concentrations of the pro-inflammatory cytokine called IL-6.

This study was conducted by Baghai TC, Varallo-Bedarida G, Born C, Häfner S, Schüle C, Eser D, Rupprecht R, Bondy B, von Schacky C.at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany.

Their conclusion: "Our results support the employment of strategies to reduce the cardiovascular risk in still cardiovascularly healthy MDD patients by targeting conventional risk factors and the Omega-3 Index." These r esults suggest that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids in order to improve the Omega-3 index, in such a population, may be beneficial.

To Improve Mild Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Try L-Citrulline

Supplementation with L-citrulline in a dose of 1½ grams daily for 1 month was shown to improve ED in a placebo-controlled, single blind study of 24 men with mild ED. Only 2% of the placebo group showed an improved erectile hardness score compared to 50% of the L-citrulline group. The L-citrulline group also showed an increase in the mean number of intercourses per month.

This study was conducted by Cormio L, De Siati M, Lorusso F, Selvaggio O, Mirabella L, Sanguedolce F, Carrieri G at the University of Foggia, Italy

Their conclusion, "Although less effective than phosphodiesterase type-5 enzyme inhibitors, at least in the short term, L-citrulline supplementation has been proved to be safe and psychologically well accepted by patients. Its role as an alternative treatment for mild to moderate ED, particularly in patients with a psychologically fear of phosphodiesterase type-5 enzyme inhibitors, deserves further research."

Creatine Levels are Lower in Vegetarians

Creatine is found mostly in meat, fish and other animal products. This is why creatine levels are known to be lower in vegetarians.

Creatine is an endogenous (made by the body) substance that is present in every human cell. It functions as an energy storehouse. Creatine is required for physical and mental exertion.

Due to it’s key role in the provision of energy, the influence of Creatine on cognitive functioning was examined, contrasting the effect in omnivores and vegetarians.

A random, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted by Benton D & Donohoe R at the Department of Psychology, University of Swansea, Swansea SA2 8PP, Wales, UK. involved 128 young adult females.  They were supplemented with creatine (20 g/d) for a period of 5 days. The Creatine supplementation was found to improve memory in the vegetarian subjects, and decrease the variability in the responses to a choice reaction-time task in both vegetarian and omnivorous subjects. These results suggest that vegetarian young women may benefit from supplementation with creatine.

Marine Sources of the Omega-3 Fatty Acids EPA & DHA and Improved Breast Cancer Prognosis

A recent study of 3, 081 women who were diagnosed & treated for early stage breast cancer indicated that dietary supplementation with EPA & DHA may be associated with reducing the risks of additional breast cancer events & all-cause mortality. The study followed up with the women after about 7.3 years and after adjusting for confounders (a factor that can influence a trial or experiment, leading to unexpected outcomes that improperly skew the results.) showed that the women with higher intakes of EPA & DHA from marine sources had a 26% reduced risk of breast cancer events & a 41% reduced risk of all-cause mortality compared to the women with lower intake.

R. E. Patterson, S. W. Flatt, V. Newman, L. Natarajan, C. L. Rock, C. A. Thomson, B. J. Caan, B. A. Parker, and J. P. Pierce, the authors of this study conclude, "The investigation indicates that marine fatty acids from food are associated with reduced risk of additional breast cancer events and all-cause mortality."

HAPPY NEW YEAR, WOW 2011!
Time to make those New Year Resolutions
If your New Year's resolution is to get healthy you have come to the right place. The Way Up offers you a full line of  alternative health supplements to help you reach that goal.

Colds & Flu season is once again upon us but what causes colds & flu? The answer is viruses cause colds & flu. Did you know that there are more than 200 different viruses that can cause colds, but much fewer that can cause the flu? This fact is why there's a shot available for the flu and not for colds.

The best way to protect yourself from colds is to boost your immune system.

But what is the immune system?

Simply stated it is a balanced network of cells and organs that defend you against disease by blocking foreign proteins from getting into your body.

Products such as vitamin C& zinc are well known for their ability to help boost the immune system. But there are also a variety of herbs that can be very beneficial as well.

For example,

  • Maitake and Shiitake Mushrooms which contain beta-glucan which has been associated with immune modulation. Studies have shown this may inhibit the growth of tumors in cancerous mice. Some human clinical studies using this in malignancies are underway.
  • Cordyceps is a dried fungus which grows on caterpillar larvae. It is rich in polysaccharides to help activate immune system response. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine.
  • Inositol Hexaphosphate (IP6) also aids in immune regulation and the regulation of a variety of importnt cellular functions. IP6 is found in nuts, seeds, grains and legumes and is the main souce of energy for the germinating plant. Animal studies have suggested anti-cancer benefits. IP6 also helps to keep blood platelets from clumping together, lowers lipids, and inhibits HIV virus replication.
  • ThymuPro: which boosts the thymus (immune regulating gland) in your body.
  • Colostrum: the pre-milk fluid secreted by all mammals after giving birth. It acts to transfer valuable immune factors from the mother to the newborn to establish immune defenses. This is why Colostrum is known as nature’s first food for the immune system.
  • Larch Arabinogalactan: Is a long, densely branched polysaccharide that has potent biological activity and immune-enhancing properties. Larch arabinogalactan works by blocking bacteria and viruses from attaching and binding to cell membranes. It stimulates the immune response by increasing the number of immune cells present in the blood. It is a unique dietary fiber that has the ability to promote the growth of friendly bacteria, increase the production of short chain fatty acids, and decrease ammonia production.
  • Beta glucan: Glucan is a beta 1, 3-linked polyglucose that boosts immune system function by increasing natural killer cell activity, and lysosomal enzyme activity of macrophages. It is very effective at activating macrophages and neutrophils2. These cells provide the immune system's first line of defense against foreign invaders. Activated macrophages or neutrophils can recognize and kill tumor cells, remove cellular debris resulting from oxidative damage, speed up recovery of damaged tissue, and further activate other components of the immune system.
  • Astragalus: A traditional Chinese herb, Astragalus contains active ingredients such as saponins, flavonoids, polysaccharides and glycosides, which stimulate immune function by increasing the phagocytotic activity of the white blood.
  • Andrographis paniculata: an herbal product derived from the Andrographis Paniculata shrub. It is best known in Western society as a popular over-the-counter alternative remedy for the common cold.
